Gray Trout

(Cynoscion regalis)


OTHER NAMES:

Weakfish or Northern Trout.

LOCATION:

Found in surf along Assateague, outside and inside inlets, bays, channels, and around structure. Caught off rock jetties at Ocean City, Maryland or near marsh tumps around Chincoteague, Virginia. This trout usually prefers deeper water and saltwater fishermen can find them around Wallops Island and along the Eastern Shore of Delmarva in many areas.

FEATURES:

Similar to the spotted sea trout, but has markings of irregular wavy lines instead of colorful spots.

SIZE:
Average is 2-5 pounds with larger ones caught in the 10 pound range and larger. The world record is 19 pounds, 2 ounces. The Gray Trout is also a tasty fish for the dinner table.
