SPOTTED SEATROUT

(Cynoscion nebulosus)


OTHER NAMES:  

Trout, Speckled Trout, Speck.

LOCATION:  

Ocean City and Chincoteague anglers target the Spotted Sea trout near Assateague from the surf to it's inland waters. Speckled Trout are most commonly caught from spring through fall near flats, channels, and holes at places like Chincoteague Bay.

FEATURES:  

Silvery and gray in color and a variety of tones with many black spots on both sides.

SIZE:  

Usually 3-4 pounds with larger fish weighing up to 10 pounds taken at times. A potential for 15 pounds or more is also there for the lucky few.

FISHING:  

A hard fighter on a variety of baits, light gear can be used while fishing near Assateague Island and it's nearby grassy shorelines. The Speckled trout is a good tasting fish and many coastal angler's and salt water fishermen along the chesapeake bay cook it in a variety of ways.

TACKLE AND BAITS:  
Spinning and baitcasting. Best natural baits are peeler crabs, live baitfish and strips of cut fish. Popular lures include jigs, while many folks have caught these trout on shinners near Assateague's inlets as well.
