Approx. 150 Assateague Ponies participated in the 2002 Pony Swim. They crossed the Assateague channel from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island while a cheering crowd of about 40,000 spectators watched.

A couple days later, adult ponies swam back to Assateague Island, leaving their foals behind on Chincoteague Island.
